Binding tight; crack at gutter between pp. 48-49, all pages still intact. Bookseller's stamp ("Acres of Books," Cincinnati) at foot of front pastedown and small pencil notation at top. Pages mildly toned, with small reddish spots at lower corners of pp. 63, 71 and 73. Children's historical novel set in pre-Civil War Ohio. Nancy Hunt, who stutters when excited, leaves her family's maple-sugar farm, Sugar Grove in Warren County, for her first trip to Cincinnati, traveling by canal boat with her father and the family's cowhide trunk. On board, a slave trader holds a mother and child captured at Middletown, and the Hunts, whose farmhouse is a hiding place on the Underground Railroad, turn to the Cincinnati abolitionist Levi Coffin. Period Cincinnati appears throughout: the German settlement of Wooden Shoe Hollow, the Methodist Book Concern on Main Street, where Nancy buys McGuffey Readers, and the James Book Store on Walnut Street. Johnny Appleseed joins the family aboard the canal boat home. Dialogue includes period racial language.
