An English observer's account of everyday domestic life in Norway in the years just after the 1905 separation from Sweden. Daniels moves from the household of the Christiania merchant (the Grosserer) through dinner parties, flat life, schooling, women, food, servants, hotels and amusements to the peasant farmhouse and a day on a better-class farm, with asides on drink, crime, charities and the Emmaus institute for inebriates.
