First catalogue of the work of the Sotta, a family of some fifteen painters from Malesco in the Val Vigezzo, Piedmont, active from the late eighteenth century into the late nineteenth. Founder Francesco Maria Sotta (b. 1764), a portraitist trained in the French manner, taught drawing in Saintes and Nantes; his sons Carlo Giuseppe, Luigi and Gioacchino worked as painters and teachers in Paris, Rome, New Orleans and Saint Petersburg as well as at home. Gnemmi traces the family's portraiture, devotional copies and church commissions through Pietro Antonio Sotta and his son Giuseppe Antonio, the last of the line. Plates include portraits of Vigezzo notables and family members, Luigi Sotta's Crucifixion, the Madonna di Re and other works for the churches of Malesco, and Pietro Antonio's landscapes.
