History of the Catholic Church in Oregon east of the Cascades, written over ten years of retirement by Monsignor William Stone (b. 1916), a priest of the Diocese of Baker born in Athena and raised in The Dalles. Going beyond the two earlier diocesan histories by Father Dominic O'Connor (1928) and Msgr. Patrick Gaire (1966), Stone follows the lay people, religious Sisters, priests and bishops who built the Church across two-thirds of the state, from the first Mass at Fort Walla Walla and the missions of Blanchet, Demers and DeSmet through the founding of the Diocese of Baker in 1903 to the early 1990s. Includes the parishes of The Dalles, Canyon City, Bend, Heppner, Hood River, Klamath Falls and other towns; the career of Father Louis Lambert Conrardy, who nursed Father Damien on Molokai and later earned a medical degree at the University of Oregon; the Extension Society chapel cars; the 1953 golden jubilee; and the 1990 ordination of Charles Graves, the first married man ordained a Roman Catholic priest in Oregon. Dedicated to Bishop Francis P. Leipzig. Ends with a portrait gallery of diocesan clergy active c. 1993, notes, bibliography and index. This 1993 printing has no ISBN; a later 1994 printing carries ISBN 0964201607.
