Collected articles by Jack Trounson (1905-1987), the Redruth-born mine surveyor known as the "Grand Old Man of Cornish mining," first published in Sands, Clays and Minerals (1937) and the Mining Magazine (1942-1951). Written from his years as surveyor at East Pool and South Crofty, they survey Cornwall's undeveloped mineral resources, wartime tin production, the principal mining districts from St Just and St Ives to Wendron, and the old properties and largely unworked ground he judged most worth reopening. The foreword by mining historian J.A. Buckley gives a short biography: Trounson's role in saving the Levant whim engine and founding what became the Trevithick Society, his chairmanship of the Cornish Mining Development Association, and the reports on some eighty South-West mines that made him the first call for later geologists and mine managers. Includes a sketch map of the mining districts of Cornwall and South Devon, output tables, plates of mines from the 1890s to the 1920s, and an index of mine names. Edited by Roger Burt and Peter Waite of the University of Exeter. Contents: List of Graphs and Maps; List of Tables; List of References to the Original Articles; Foreword; Introduction; Section 1: Cornwall's Undeveloped Mineral Resources in the 1930s; Section 2: Cornish Mining in the Second World War (The Industry at the Beginning of the War; Past Production and Suggestions for the Future); Section 3: Regional Survey of the Mining Districts (The St Just and St Ives Mining Districts; The Marazion District; The Wheal Vor or Breage District; The St Erth, Gwinear and Crowan Districts; The Wendron District); Section 4: Some Useful Prospects for the Future (Levant to South Condurrow; Tolgus Tunnel to Lambriggan; St Austell-Par Mines to Trebartha-Lemarne); Mine Index
