Peter Hunt's handbook for turning cast-off furniture into painted "peasant" pieces, published at the height of his fame as the Provincetown decorator behind Peter Hunt's Peasant Village. Old Furniture Converted into New pairs before-and-after photographs of about two dozen projects (a late Victorian office desk, a Welsh cupboard, a parlor organ made into a writing desk, kerosene lamps turned smoking stands, fishermen's duck decoys), with Hunt's notes on glazing and antiquing and the list of paints and brushes he used. Steps in Marbleizing follows in six photographs, and The Basic Stroke teaches his one-stroke brush technique through color plates of borders, figures, animals and motifs. The endpaper sampler of strokes is printed with his signature and "Anno Domini 45"; color plates for the endpapers and p. 2 courtesy of E. I. du Pont de Nemours. Hunt (1896-1967) drew national attention in the 1940s through Life and House Beautiful, and his painted furniture is now collected at auction.
