Entries are keyed to real towns and communities with improbable names (Bugscuffle, Only, Nameless, Dull, Frog Level, Punkin Center), each followed by its county and that county's namesake, then a tall tale credited to a contributor, many under pen names such as Opie Littleton, Fancy Frog and Ball Point. The count covers all 95 counties plus five "never put on record." Part Two gathers readers' jokes, riddles, ghost stories and poems by subject, including a section on Grinders Switch and Graceland; Part Three is the author's defense of collecting old jokes, quoting Bennett Cerf. Covers reproduce photographs of a dozen Tennessee place-name signs. Includes a reprinted 1988 Associated Press item and a quip about Governor McWherter.
