In Very Good condition. Black glossy pictorial covers with aerial photograph of Slyne Head (Irish Air Corps, 1954) and title lettering by Peter Joseph in white; light bumping and creasing to edges and corners, mild shelf and edge wear, some color loss along front cover edges and spine, a few faint surface scratches to front cover. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Copyright page misprints the original publication year as "1900." The text half of Tim Robinson's Connemara map and gazetteer, the result of seven years of fieldwork (1982-89) on foot and by bicycle across west Galway. A preface and the introductory essay "Space, Time and Connemara" trace the region from its geology through prehistory, the O'Flahertys and the Cromwellian dispossession to the present. The gazetteer follows parish by parish, from Inishbofin and Ballynakill to An Spideal, with alphabetical notes on each townland: Irish and anglicised forms of the name and their meanings, archaeology, local history, and placename lore from hundreds of local informants. Separate indexes of English and Irish names make it a usable townland reference on its own for local and family historians. A note on the 2005 reprint explains that the map could not be redrawn, but the gazetteer was corrected and updated in square brackets. Robinson (1935-2020) was the author of Stones of Aran and the Connemara trilogy; his archive is at the University of Galway.
