Condition & notes

In Good condition. Staple bound, binding tight. Orange covers illustrated in maroon with a mounted knight (front) and castle (rear); light bumping and creasing to edges and corners, mild shelf wear, light soiling. Small inked code stamped at head of title page. Selections section (pp. 42-50) with glosses and translation notes in blue ink throughout, including the annotator's correction of a misattributed passage; otherwise pages lightly toned and unmarked. Prepared by Daniel Knapp and Niel K. Snortum of San Francisco State College, consultant readers Harold B. Allen and Rudolph C. Troike, to accompany NCTE's three-record instructional album. Covers the history of English to Chaucer, his vocabulary (misleading cognates, obsolete forms), morphology and syntax, then reconstructs the phonology of 14th-century London English, with a table of vowel equivalents and the record script with notes on each consonant and vowel. Selections from The Book of the Duchess, The Parliament of Fowls, Troilus and Criseyde and the Canterbury Tales. The passage on pp. 48-49 printed as from "The Reeve's Tale" (Absolon and Alisoun) is from The Miller's Tale; the annotator has struck the attribution and corrected it.
