Two microdemographic studies of neighboring rural communities in the interior of Menorca, built from parish sacramental registers, padrons and Easter-duty lists. Ferreries belonged to the municipality of Es Mercadal until 1836. The Ferreries study, written first in 1989 and revised in 1991 but not printed until 1998, finds Ferreries the poorest population on the island in the first half of the 19th century, with high marriage and birth rates, life expectancy at birth of about 24 years against 28.8 for Menorca, and emigration to Algeria. The Mercadal volume extends the method to Es Mercadal, Fornells and Sant Joan dels Horts. Both include chapters on family structure and onomastics, statistical appendices and bibliographies.
