Catalog of a 29-work Diego Rivera exhibition lent by the Museo de Arte del Estado de Veracruz, Orizaba. Long Beach was the only West Coast venue of its U.S. tour, and it was the third exhibition held at the Museum of Latin American Art, which opened in November 1996. In place of murals, the show followed Rivera through easel paintings, watercolors and drawings: student landscapes of Mixcoac and Orizaba, Cubist still lifes and portraits from his Paris years, Retrato de Lupe Marin (1924), and drawings of harvesters from 1956. Essay by guest curator John Coppola in English and Spanish, statements by Rafael Arias of the Instituto Veracruzano de Cultura and MOLAA director Patricia House, and a full checklist with medium and dimensions. Cover reproduces Hombre cargando pavo (1944). The laid-in card announced MOLAA's next exhibition, which opened five days after the Rivera show closed, with opening-weekend events led by Rodolfo Morales (1925-2001), the Oaxacan painter Rufino Tamayo helped bring to wider notice in 1975.
