Condition & notes

In Good condition. Staple bound. Yellow illustrated paper covers lettered in brown, front with fruit-bowl vignette and "Homemakers' Creed," rear with Wadena News advertisement; bumping to edges and corners, mild to moderate shelf and edge wear, with a scratched patch and a scuffed patch at upper corner of front cover. Mild to moderate overall swelling and toning. Binding tight. First leaf (pp. 1-2) with insect damage, small holes through the page and a few brown spots; text still legible. A few light ink notes in margins, mostly corrections and additions, two of them entering corrections from the errata slip. Otherwise unmarked. Community cookbook of the Quill Lake Homemakers' Club (1914-1971), one of the Saskatchewan Homemakers' Clubs organized from 1911 under the University of Saskatchewan Extension Division. Recipes are signed by members from Quill Lake, Watson, Leroy, Asquith and Steveson, with a few from as far off as Los Angeles and New Westminster, and include a French "Conserves de Poisson." Advertisements record the farm town in 1949: Massey-Harris, McCormick-Deering, J. I. Case and Minneapolis-Moline dealers, Co-operative Store No. 71, Eng Chee's Quill Lake Cafe, the Star Theatre at Watson ("equipped with hearing aids for the hard of hearing"), and a full-page National Grain advertisement for 2,4-D weed sprays, in commercial use only since 1946. Printed by the job department of the Wadena News. A copy is held by the University of Alberta Library.
