Condition & notes

In Good condition. Staple bound. Yellow illustrated paper covers lettered in black and red; mild to moderate surface and edge wear, with some spotting, soiling and foxing, heavier along edges. Binding tight. Previous owner's bookplate and original price sticker on inside front wrapper. Printed facsimile inscription and signature of the author on title page. Pages mildly toned. Otherwise unmarked. Barnard (c. 1886-1963) ranched the B Bar B at the foot of Superstition Mountain for decades and turned out with sheriff's posses searching for lost prospectors. Here he sets out to separate record from legend on Jacob Walzer (Jacob Waltz to most historians), the "Old Dutchman," who died in Phoenix in 1891. Includes a year-by-year chronology drawing on Phoenix city directories, a list of the old-timers interviewed, a "Curse of the Apache Gold" photo section on the 1959 Stanley Fernandez murder, a chapter on Goldfield, and Barnard's autobiography. Map and drawings by Charles Frederick Higham, pen name of John Lindley Higham, co-author of the 1946 True Story of Jacob Walzer. Eulogy by Barnard's niece printed inside rear wrapper.
