In Very Good condition with an Acceptable dust jacket. Brown cloth over flexible boards with black Vanguard device on front, black lettering and decorative bands on spine. Mild shelf and edge wear, mild bumping to edges and corners. Binding tight. Pages toned, crease to head of leaf at Part II. Otherwise unmarked. Dust jacket with Art Deco design in black, title panel on front, spine priced 75 cents and numbered 170, rear panel and front flap listing Vanguard's radical early titles; large triangular chip at foot of front panel and smaller chip at upper corner, closed tears at lower left, hole at foot of spine panel, chipping at spine head, large loss at upper corner of rear panel with chipping along edges; rear flap lacking; toning and soiling throughout. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Primer on the theory of flight for the general reader, first published in London by John Hamilton in 1928 and issued here as no. 170 of the Vanguard Books. Part I explains the aerofoil, stability and control, and the construction and operation of the aeroplane; Part II covers lift, non-rigid and rigid airships, with a closing section on airship navigation around cyclones. The foreword is by Sir Samuel Hoare, then British Secretary of State for Air. Marsh (1886-1963) wrote the aeroplane design section of A History of Aeronautics (1921) and Aeronautical Prints and Drawings (1924). Vanguard was founded in 1926 with Garland Fund money to publish inexpensive left-wing classics, and the jacket lists Kropotkin, Scott Nearing, Studies of Soviet Russia and a new series on American imperialism edited by Harry Elmer Barnes.
