In Very Good condition with a Very Good dust jacket. Green cloth boards with black lettering and publisher's device on spine. Mild shelf and edge wear, some bumping to corners and some toning along edges. Binding tight. Inscribed, personalized and signed by author in green ink on front free endpaper, dated January 1986. Otherwise unmarked. Illustrated dust jacket reproducing Ted Tilby's painting Robert Burns - Portrait Biography on front panel, photograph of the author at Kirkoswald on rear panel; a few small nicks and light creasing along edges, mild shelf and edge wear, fading to spine; faint dampstaining to unprinted inner side of jacket at foot of spine panel, not visible from outside. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Twelve essays on Burns for the general reader by an Aberdeen-born medievalist, then professor at the University of Alberta and a member of the Edmonton Burns Club. Chapters take their titles from lines of Burns and include the Burns Supper, the ploughman pose, and Burns's comic treatment of the Devil and Calvinist Hell. Appendices give a select bibliography, a select discography, and a Burns Country itinerary (Alloway, Mauchline, Kirkoswald, Tarbolton, Failford, Kilmarnock, Dumfries) illustrated with the author's own photographs.
