In Good condition. Red-orange and cream pictorial paper covers, color photograph of a painted ceramic jar with plum blossoms to front. Bumping and creasing to edges and corners, mild to moderate shelf and edge wear, with some color loss along edges and spine and more to red-orange panel of rear cover; soiling to front cover and toning to rear cover. Staple bound, binding tight. Endpapers toned with mild foxing. Pages mildly toned. Otherwise unmarked. Catalogue of the loan exhibition assembled in a few weeks to coincide with the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco, held jointly by the de Young and Japan's Cultural Properties Protection Commission. Foreword by museum director Walter Heil, who writes that the Japanese government released national treasures for their first showing outside Japan, nearly half of them Registered Important Art Objects, lent by temples, shrines, the National Museum in Tokyo, private collectors and the Imperial Household; preface by Commission chairman Seiichiro Takahashi. Painting from 12th-century Buddhist images through Sesshu, Korin and Okyo, with calligraphy, sculpture, Gigaku, Bugaku and Noh masks, armor, sword guards, lacquer, ceramics, textiles and dolls. Includes lists of lenders and of periods in Japanese art history.
