In Very Good condition. Glossy pictorial paper covers, the L.A. Louver installation of sixtyslippers wrapping front and rear, with mild shelf wear. Small printed label ("ART-ARCH/ Shelton60") at lower corner of rear cover. Binding tight. Light toning to page edges; faint residue of an erased pencil price at head of title page. Pages otherwise clean and unmarked. Catalogue for the touring exhibition of Shelton's sixtyslippers (1997), sixty cast iron cone-shaped forms 18 to 48 inches across hung by cables just above the floor, first shown at L.A. Louver in Venice, then at the Berkeley Art Museum (November 11, 1998 to February 28, 1999), the Madison Art Center, and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. Baas's essay reads the piece against thirty years of Shelton's work, from the dream drawings and welding training in Troy, Ohio, through floatinghouseDEADMAN (1985-86), trunknutsWHITEHEADfloater, the thingsgetwet series shown at LACMA in 1994, bottlemuff, nightymonster, godspipes (the 188 fiberglass parts shown at the Irish Museum of Modern Art), and blackelephanthouse, then in progress at the Henry Moore Studio. Lewallen's interview, "The Sublime and the Sore Leg" (Malibu, August 20, 1998), covers the origin of the slipper form in lowcone (1983), the run-together titles, the stupa, and the ship-in-a-bottle shifts of scale. Shelton (b. 1951), a Pomona and UCLA graduate, later made the LAPD headquarters sculpture sixbeastsandtwomonkeys; his work is held by MoMA, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, LACMA, and the Walker Art Center.
