In good condition. Orange laminated card covers, lettering in red, the lamination turned in and mitred at the corners as issued. Chipping to the lamination with nicks and short tears along edges, creasing to corners, moderate scuffing and soiling. Binding tight. Pages toned but otherwise unmarked. Practical seamanship manual on rope, wire, blocks, tackles and ground tackle, first published 1925 and still being reprinted forty years later. Stopford opens the second edition by quoting a naval flag officer who had dismissed the first, holding that "most naval learners will be content to acquire their instruction from practical experience rather than from a book of this class." He answers that writing it down was meant to prevent destruction of material and danger to life and limb, and returns to boat-ropes, believing boats reported capsized while being lowered were lost for want of the knowledge. Part I covers cordage manufacture, bends and hitches, splicing, sennit and net-making, blocks and purchases, derricks and towing; Part II anchors, cables, mooring and clearing hawse, closing with fancy knots.
