Condition & notes

In good condition. Black illustrated paper covers show mild shelf wear and creasing to edges and corners, with some color loss along edges and spine. Printed price 6s. 6d. on front cover. Binding tight. Pages toned but otherwise unmarked. Written to cover the Ministry of Transport syllabus for the Master's Certificate of Competency, treating both the magnetic and the gyro compass. The magnetic section works through the coefficients A to E, Flinder's bar, quadrantal spheres, heeling error, the Kelvin deflector and the deviascope, the apparatus of correcting a compass for a steel ship's own magnetism. The gyro section covers the Sperry, S. G. Brown and Arma-Brown compasses; the illustrations on pages 18 and 20 were supplied by S. G. Brown Ltd. of Watford, which began building gyrocompasses during the First World War and licensed the Arma flotation design from Bosch Arma in 1957.
