Condition & notes

In very good condition. Glossy black illustrated covers show mild shelf wear with fine surface scratching to front panel, moderate shelf wear to back cover, light bumping and nicking to edges and at foot of spine. Binding tight. Light spotting to inside of back cover. No prices realized sheet. Pages otherwise unmarked. Auction catalogue for Butterfield & Butterfield sale 2052P, volume P44, held March 22, 1989 simultaneously in San Francisco and Los Angeles, lots 2901-3231. Each lot carries artist, dates, title, medium, dimensions, provenance and estimate, most with a photographic reproduction. Property came from Claremont University Center of Claremont, California, a private collection in Seattle, and a Northern California college. European paintings open the sale, including attributions to Dirck Baburen and Lodovico Cigoli Cardi and a Louis B. Hurt Highland cattle subject with M. Knoedler provenance. In the American section, lot 3154 is Maxfield Parrish's Cadmus Sowing the Dragon's Teeth, on the front cover and again as a full-page color plate, followed by two Parrish studies at 3155 and 3156, one for the St. Regis menu board and one for a Collier's cover. Also Harvey Thomas Dunn, Millard Sheets, Edouard Cortes and Eustace Ziegler.
