Condition & notes

In good condition. Blue illustrated covers show heavy rubbing and scuffing with white showing through, heaviest along the spine edge and at the corners, with edge chipping to the rear panel and scattered surface scratching to both panels. Binding tight. Manuscript note in ink at head of the sale information page reads "Prices include 10% Buyers Fee." Hammer prices annotated in pencil beside the estimates through the illustrated pages. Laid in is the publisher's green prices-realized sheet for sale 3910P, complete for lots 4102 to 4464, with a center fold and a small nick at the head. Pages otherwise unmarked. Auction catalogue for Butterfield & Butterfield sale 3910P, held in two sessions on February 17 and 18, 1988, conducted simultaneously in San Francisco and Los Angeles, lots 4101 to 4464. Each lot carries artist, dates, title, medium, dimensions, provenance and estimate, most with a photographic reproduction. Guy Rose's Twilight, Laguna Beach realized 44,000 against a 25/35,000 estimate, the top result of the sale; Granville Redmond's Deserted Beach of 1901 brought 33,000, Edgar Payne's Venetian Sailboats 18,700, Julian Rix's California Landscape, Santa Barbara 16,500. Also William Keith, Thomas Hill, William Alexander Coulter, Angel Espoy, Paul Lauritz and a group of Ferdinand Burgdorff canvases with Bohemian Club provenance. Property sold for the benefit of Westmont College, Clairbourn School and the Bob Hope U.S.O. Club. Index of artists is misheaded "Sale 3903P," a printer's error; the sale information page and the laid-in price list both read 3910P.
