Condition & notes
In very good condition with a very good dust jacket. White paper over boards with green lettering on spine. Light bumping and scuffing to edges and corners of covers. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Pictorial dust jacket has light creasing along edges and mild shelf wear. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Portrait of Munich's Viktualienmarkt, Germany's largest open-air food market, trading since 1807 on the square below the Alter Peter. Schaefer and Hoehne, both editors at a Munich daily, work it stall by stall: the dealer who flies to the Paris Halles twice a month for specialty vegetables, the cheesemonger carrying 120 varieties, the family that has held the same asparagus pitch for ninety years. Each profile carries the stallholder's own recipe. Foreword by Munich's Lord Mayor Christian Ude. Color photographs by Heinz Gebhardt, who has documented the city since 1968, set against archival views from the 1880s. Closes with a map and directory of every stall. Issued under the Mary Hahn imprint, the Berlin cookbook house whose Illustriertes Kochbuch sold past a million copies, now published by F. A. Herbig.
