In Very Good condition with a Good dust jacket. Brick red cloth boards, black spine panel with gilt lettering, mild shelf and edge wear with some color loss along edges and at head and foot of spine. Top edge stained red as issued. Binding tight. Endpapers mildly toned, pages clean and unmarked. Pictorial dust jacket in yellow with a wagon train vignette, price intact at $4.95, a 1.5 inch tear at top edge of front panel with several smaller nicks, tears and creasing along the edges, mild shelf wear and some fading to spine. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Cline revised her Berkeley dissertation into the first comprehensive account of the Great Basin, from its discovery in 1776 through Fremont's second expedition, which gave the region its name. She had access to unpublished diaries and letters in the Hudson's Bay Company archives, so British operations in the Basin are set out in authoritative detail here for the first time, and the map of Ogden's Snake Country Expedition of 1829 is reproduced for the first time. Foreword by George P. Hammond of the Bancroft Library. Volume 39 in the American Exploration and Travel Series. Cline died at forty-four in 1973; her biography of Peter Skene Ogden appeared posthumously.
