Edmondson (1916-2002) chaired printmaking at California State University, Los Angeles from 1964 to 1986, founded the California Printmakers Society and held a 1960 Guggenheim Fellowship. His manual runs from line, tone and printing through color intaglio, the collagraph, viscosity printing and sculptural etching. The color section sets it apart: printmakers give first-person accounts of their own plates, down to inking sequences and a color-separation chart with film stock, aperture and exposure. Reproductions run from Piranesi, Rembrandt, Goya and Ensor to Ed Ruscha and Wayne Thiebaud, many drawn from the Achenbach Foundation at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. Page 36 carries Betye Saar's Palm of Love of 1966, an early etching from her palmistry work now in the Museum of Modern Art, her name misspelled in the caption. Contents: Introduction; Traditional Techniques in Etching (Line, Tone, and Texture; Printing); Modern Techniques in Etching (Basic Methods of Color Etching; The Collagraph Print; Viscosity Printing; Photographic Methods; Multimedia Printmaking); Experimental Techniques in Etching (New Materials and Processes; Collages, Decals, and other Transfers; Sculptural Etching; Potentials for Printmaking); Bibliography; Glossary; Index.
