Wraps, xii pp. and 112 plates; 25 cm; text in English with plate captions in Spanish and English; second edition, revised and enlarged; illustrated with 263 photogravure reproductions, one in color, and a map of the pre-Columbian culture areas printed on the rear cover.
In Good condition. Stiff brown illustrated card covers with a few small nicks, bumping and creasing to edges and corners, mild to moderate overall shelf and edge wear, some color loss along edges and spine and on the front cover, and mild soiling and staining. Side-sewn with string, strings starting to pull in a few places but intact. Pages mildly toned, otherwise unmarked. Ink from the cover illustration has bled through to the inside front cover. English translation of Arte Prehispanico de Mexico, itself the second, revised and enlarged edition of Prehispanic Monuments of Mexico (1933). Foreword explains that the graphic material was regrouped so the architectural monuments of each culture stand alongside the sculpture, pottery, jade and metalwork of the same people, and that the title was changed accordingly. Plates run from the Archaic cultures through Teotihuacan, Totonac, Toltec, Zapotec, Mixtec, Maya and Aztec, with major sites including El Tajin, Xochicalco and Monte Alban. Rear cover carries Miguel Covarrubias's map of the pre-Columbian culture areas, signed in the artwork. Printing completed 15 December 1945 under the direction of Francisco Orozco Munoz, photogravures by Casa Tostado Grabador, Mexico City.
