Black pebble-grained cloth, blind-stamped title panel and International Textbook Company monogram on front cover, blind-stamped publisher's panel at foot, gilt lettering on spine bright. Light shelf and edge wear. Binding tight. Green and cream marbled endpapers, blue-stained page edges. Previous owner's name in faint ink at head of front pastedown. Otherwise unmarked. Volume 229B in the bound series issued by International Textbook Company, the publishing arm of the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. ICS grew out of a mine-safety question-and-answer column run by Thomas J. Foster in the Colliery Engineer and Metal Miner and enrolled its first class of 500 miners in 1891; cumulative enrollment reached four million by 1930, making it the most successful correspondence school in American history. The bound volumes gathered the loose serial-numbered Instruction Papers into permanent form, this one comprising Boiler Details Part 1 (Serial 2835A, Edition 1), Part 2, and Pipes and Pipe Fittings, by A. Ulmann, Jr., credited on the title page as Instructor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Part 1 is riveted construction and the pressure vessel itself: forms of rivets and methods of riveting to the A.S.M.E. Boiler Code, double-strap butt joints and butt joints with strap of equal width, the location of longitudinal seams in shell boilers and the seam connections and smokebox joints of locomotive boilers, fire-door and mud-ring connections and the fire-cracks that open at them, boiler and drum heads including bumped and dished heads, steam domes on stationary and locomotive boilers, steam drums, mud-drums and blow-offs, and the cutting and reinforcing of manholes, washout openings and boiler nozzles. Part 2 takes up what holds the plates apart and what the fire touches: solid and flexible staybolts, through stays, stay-tubes, radial, gusset, diagonal and girder stays, throat braces and steel angle stays, then boiler tubes and their manufacture, upsetting and installation, boiler and furnace flues, cylindrical and corrugated furnaces including the Morison and Purves ribbed types, combustion chambers, waterwalls, and convection and radiant superheaters. Pipes and Pipe Fittings is the longest section, running from commercial grades of wrought and galvanized pipe through couplings, unions, flange unions and gaskets, joints, bends, coverings and supports, globe, angle, gate, check and pressure-reducing valves, steam separators, drip pockets and exhaust heads, bucket, tilting and float steam traps, the design of single-pipe and double-pipe systems, calculations for the flow of steam and water and the sizing of mains, and closing with high-pressure steam piping to 2,000 pounds at 900 degrees, motor-operated valves, and the standard pipe flange tables as amplified in 1928. The two double-page plates are signed at foot BB229B 2835B and BB229B 2836 for the publisher's Bluebook series, the first a sectional elevation of a water-tube boiler setting, the second plan and elevation views of a boiler and engine room. All three sections carry the 1933 copyright.
