In Very Good condition, no dust jacket. Black pebble-grained cloth, blind-stamped title panel and International Textbook Company monogram on front cover, blind-stamped publisher's panel at foot, gilt lettering on spine bright. Mild edge wear. Binding tight, spine sound. Green and cream marbled endpapers, blue-stained page edges. Pages clean and unmarked. Volume 190D in the bound series issued by International Textbook Company, the publishing arm of the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. ICS grew out of a mine-safety question-and-answer column run by Thomas J. Foster in the Colliery Engineer and Metal Miner and enrolled its first class of 500 miners in 1891; cumulative enrollment reached four million by 1930, making it the most successful correspondence school in American history. The bound volumes gathered the loose serial-numbered Instruction Papers into permanent form, this one comprising Gage Making (Serial 5098-2, Edition 1), Jigs and Fixtures, and Jig and Fixture Making, by Edward Griffiths, credited on the title page as Director of the Time Study and Methods Department at Westinghouse Electric & Mfg. Co. Gage Making is the substantial section and the more unusual one, running from classification, accuracy and tolerances through plug and ring gages, the grinding and lapping of gages and the lap holders that hold them, thread gages and the thread-grinding machine with its dresser and lead testing, end-measuring, caliper and snap gages, limit and flat-surface gages and the distortion grinding introduces into a flat, angular gages, the grinding and lapping of knife-edge straightedges, taper gages, then special gages including the cylindrical square, indicator gages and the ball gage for tapered dovetails, gaging compound angles on tilting sine-bar chucks, and templet construction. Jigs and Fixtures works through types of jigs with worked examples, plate, box, combination, boring-bar, indexing and inclined-hole jigs, then bushings plain, flanged, slip, extension and screw, jig covers and clamps of strap, wedge, toggle and cam pattern, supports, reliefs, stops and fastenings, and the fixtures themselves down to vise, bolted, trunnion, roller and broaching types. Jig and Fixture Making closes with the shop processes: locating and producing holes by miller, by buttons, by calculation, by micrometer and rings, by templet and by indexing, then a long run of worked examples in jig making and the making of clamping fixtures, ending with a complete material list for a tongued-and-grooved bar fixture. Gage Making carries the 1939 copyright, the two later sections 1936.
