In Very Good condition, no dust jacket. Black pebble-grained cloth, blind-stamped title panel and International Textbook Company monogram on front cover, blind-stamped publisher's panel at foot, gilt lettering on spine bright. Mild shelf wear. Binding tight. Green and cream marbled endpapers, blue-stained page edges. Pages clean and unmarked. Volume 183 in the bound series issued by International Textbook Company, the publishing arm of the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. ICS grew out of a mine-safety question-and-answer column run by Thomas J. Foster in the Colliery Engineer and Metal Miner and enrolled its first class of 500 miners in 1891; cumulative enrollment reached four million by 1930, making it the most successful correspondence school in American history. The bound volumes gathered the loose serial-numbered Instruction Papers into permanent form, this one comprising Milling-Machine Practice (Serial 2217, Edition 1) and Milling-Machine Indexing and Spiral Work. The companion to volume 182: where that book described the machine and its tooling, this one is about running it. The first section covers the economics of milling, selection of cutter, speeds and feeds, preparation of stock, setting the machine and testing the central setting of the cutter, then the whole repertoire of workholding, on the table, in the vise, on the face plate, in fixtures and chucks, between index centers, taper work between centers, work rests, direction of feed, and the causes of revolution and chatter marks. The second takes up the dividing head: direct, indirect, compound, differential and linear indexing, spiral work and the calculation of spiral-head change gears, cutting helixes, and the milling of cams. It closes with two working reference tables, Table I for simple and differential indexing and Table II for compound indexing. Both sections carry the 1927 copyright without later dates.
