In Very Good condition, no dust jacket. Black pebble-grained cloth, blind-stamped title panel and International Textbook Company monogram on front cover, blind-stamped publisher's panel at foot, gilt lettering on spine clean and bright. Mild surface and edge wear, with some bumping to top corner of front cover. Binding tight. Green and cream marbled endpapers, blue-stained page edges. Pages clean and unmarked. Volume 182 in the bound series issued by International Textbook Company, the publishing arm of the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. ICS grew out of a mine-safety question-and-answer column run by Thomas J. Foster in the Colliery Engineer and Metal Miner and enrolled its first class of 500 miners in 1891; cumulative enrollment reached four million by 1930, making it the most successful correspondence school in American history. The bound volumes gathered the loose serial-numbered Instruction Papers into permanent form, this one comprising Milling Machines (Serial 2215, Edition 1) and Milling-Machine Equipment. The first section works through the machine itself, plain, vertical and universal millers and the specials that industry built around them, cross-rail and rotary planer types, profiling and spline machines, duplex and drum-type tables, then the attachments that extended a horizontal machine's reach. The second takes up everything mounted on it: the full range of cutters, plain, side, face, angular, end, formed and interlocking, their rake, clearance, sharpening and lubrication, then arbors, collets, chucks, vises, index centers and dividing heads. The folding plate at pp. 8-9 opens to sectional views of a plain milling machine's feed and speed gearing, signed at foot BB 182 2215 for the publisher's Bluebook series. Both sections carry the 1927 copyright without later dates.
