In Very Good condition. Orange wrappers, with a small nick to the top edge at the front corner and mild shelf and edge wear. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. The Book Club of California's 2006 membership keepsake, compiled by Robert Dickover, reproducing California ex libris (bookplates) drawn largely from the Club's own exhibitions of 1913, 1953, and 2002 together with plates from other private and institutional collections. An introduction traces the history of the bookplate from Durer and the old Mexican fire marks forward, followed by eighty-one plates with commentary, arranged by owner, among them General Mariano Vallejo (the first bookplate printed in California), Phoebe and William Randolph Hearst, James Strohn Copley, David O. Selznick, W. Atlee Burpee, and film director George Cukor. Designed and printed by fine-press printer Peter Rutledge Koch with Jonathan Gerken, the text set in a special letterpress version of Giovanni Mardersteig's Dante with Greco Adornado and Rialto Italic for display, color offset by Creative-Litho, bound by Taurus Bookbindery. Dedicated to book collector Michael Harrison (1897-2005).
