In Very Good condition with an Acceptable dust jacket. Tan paper-covered boards with maroon cloth spine and gold spine lettering, mild shelf and edge wear. Binding tight. Mild toning to endpapers, otherwise pages clean and unmarked. Maroon illustrated dust jacket (watercolor reproduction of a rock painting from Panther Cave, Pecos River Valley) shows mild shelf wear, a few small nicks and tears, creasing along edges, and some color loss along edges and spine; back flap has been neatly cut away, leaving only the bottom two inches. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. A chronology of American Indian history told through Native art and artifacts, with emphasis on the tribes of North America, tracing the cultural, political, and military events that shaped their world from earliest times through 1973. Highwater built the book around reproductions of ancient and contemporary American Indian art, each keyed to the events it illustrates.
