In Good condition, no dust jacket. Tan and teal pictorial cloth with a white snow-capped mountain illustration on the front cover and gold lettering on the front cover and spine; bumping and scuffing to edges and corners with light nicking and fraying to the cloth at the corner tips, moderate overall scuffing and soiling to covers, a quarter-sized black stain on the back cover with three smaller stains nearby, light rippling to the cloth on the back cover, and fading to the gold lettering on the spine. Binding is solid. Front free endpaper inscribed by the author, unsigned: "To Rev. Dr. Moore, With the Christian Regards of the Author. Delta Colo. Oct 26/1907." A small chip to the back free endpaper. A one-inch closed tear at the foot of page 17. Pages toned with age and occasional light spotting and soiling throughout.Rev. George M. Darley's personal reminiscences of his work as a Presbyterian missionary in southwestern Colorado during the "Great San Juan Excitement" of the late nineteenth century. Darley arrived in the San Juan region in the 1870s and spent over two decades preaching in the mining camps and frontier towns of Lake City, Del Norte, Ouray, and the Animas country. The forty-two chapters cover the missionary work alongside frontier life: gambling halls and faro dealers, lynchings and mob violence, encounters with the Ute Indians, snow slides and avalanches, prospectors and mining camps, the Mears toll road, the Box Canon at Ouray, and the first grand jury at Ouray. Listed in Adams, "Six-Guns and Saddle Leather," No. 556, where it is noted as containing "a chapter on lawlessness."
