Binding tight. Interior pages clean and bright; otherwise unmarked.The catalog of a major retrospective survey of Nebraska art organized by Norman A. Geske at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. Geske's introduction traces the development of art in Nebraska from the early artist-explorers through contemporary practice, divided into four parts: artists who recorded the territory before settlement; the pioneers who first established a regional artistic community; figures who linked the regionalist tradition to mid-century modernism; and contemporary painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, and craftsmen working in the state in the early 1980s. Each catalog artist is given a biographical entry with details of the works exhibited and reproductions of many of them. Concluded by three essays (by Donald Bartlett Doe on the role of the land in Nebraska art, Rena M. Coen on American art and art history, and James T. Forrest on regional art museums) drawn from the symposium "Toward a State Art History and Collection" held in conjunction with the exhibition, plus a bibliography.
