Cover art is Terry Cramolini's oil painting "The Rib Room of the Carlton Tower" (1994); the frontispiece reproduces "January," a 19th-century ceramic tile by Josiah Wedgwood and Sons. The Correspondences section opens with a piece by Stephen Ratcliffe on Mallarmé. The Personal History section opens with "I Am Assunta Marangoni Comin, This Is My Story," an Italian immigrant memoir accompanied by family photographs.
