Glossy pictorial paper covers in yellow with a salmon-pink frame reproducing a leaf of the Domesday manuscript on the front, light bumping to edges, mild shelf wear and fading to spine. Binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Issued on the 900th anniversary of the Domesday Book, this handbook documents the 1984-1986 conservation, photography, and rebinding of the Great and Little Domesday volumes by the Public Record Office. [From back cover] The Domesday Book is one of the foremost English records, unparalleled in contemporary Europe, and used as a legal document, from which there is no appeal, from the twelfth century to the present. The two volumes were first rebound in 1952, adding a great deal to knowledge of the compilation of the text and the way in which the larger volume was written. In 1986, which marked the 900th anniversary of the volumes, further investigation and study were carried out, and both volumes dismantled, conserved and photographed before rebinding, to allow the publication of a full-colour facsimile.
