In very good condition. Light brown Illustrated paper covers have light bumping to edges and corners and light overall scuffing. Binding tight (staple bound). Sticker residue on top edge of inside of front cover. Otherwise pages are clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. Monograph published in conjunction with the 1960 centennial of the Pony Express. It provides a clear and well-documented history of stagecoach and express services in California, distinguishing between the operations of stage lines (passenger and mail transport) and express companies (freight and package delivery). Smith draws attention to the common historical confusion between the two and especially challenges misconceptions about Wells Fargo's role in the Pony Express. He outlines key figures and companies, including James Birch, Phineas Banning, Russell, Majors & Waddell, and Ben Holladay. The volume also explores the role of California's stage lines during and after the Gold Rush.
