This original 1879 edition is a detailed military report documenting the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina following the Treaty of Berlin (1878). Compiled by the Austro-Hungarian General Staff's War History Department using official sources, it represents the first section of a larger multi-part report, covering the historical and political background leading up to the occupation, a detailed military-geographical analysis of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the logistical and strategic planning for the Austro-Hungarian invasion. One of the fold-outs features a demographic and economic breakdown of the region, categorizing the population by religious and ethnic groups (Muslims, Orthodox Christians, Catholics, Jews, and Romani), as well as livestock and annual cereal production statistics. Other fold-outs include military organization tables showing the structure of various Austro-Hungarian army corps and divisions involved in the occupation. Another fold-out exhibit within the book has illustrations of the Kula and Karaula, key defensive structures along the Serbian and Montenegrin borders, used for garrisoning troops and securing strategic positions. The Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878 was a direct result of the Treaty of Berlin, which ended the Russo-Turkish War. The treaty granted Austria-Hungary the right to administer Bosnia and Herzegovina, while they nominally remained part of the Ottoman Empire. However, the occupation met with armed resistance, particularly from local Muslim and Orthodox Christian groups. This book offers a firsthand strategic and military analysis of the occupation, making it a valuable resource for historians of the Balkans, Austro-Hungarian military strategy, and European colonialism.
