In good condition. Cream illustrated paper covers have a few tiny nicks and light bumping and creasing to edges and corners with a tiny bit of peeling to the corner tips. Light to moderate overall scuffing, soiling and spotting to covers as well. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. Essay by Andrea Rose. Artists include David Bomberg, Leon Kossoff, Frank Auerbach, John Lessore, Kevin Sinnott, Simon Edmondson. Biographies included. [From Introduction] Three years ago I began organizing an exhibition of British painters who share a manner of paint application. John Nava, who had just assumed the position of Gallery Director at CSU, San Bernardino, expressed interest in taking and traveling the exhibition if it took on a figurative focus. Though somewhat limited given my original concept it sounded interesting and very ambitious. I agreed and embarked on an education that continues to unfold. Figuration in and of itself is an extremely broad subject within the tradition of British painting. A variation of my original premise revealed the six painters who comprise this exhibition. Historically, the great landscape and portrait painters are from the British Isles. By including artists from three generations this exhibition suggests the continuation of a tradition but only in the sense of subject. Depictive imaging has given way to expressive interpretation. Auerbach's and Kossoffs portrait paintings bear little resemblance to those who sat for the artist. And, Sinnott's and Edmondson's charged social/political statements are evoked by what might otherwise be mundane or prosaic experiences. . . .
