[From back cover] This is the first book ever published on Willem de Kooning, one of the most influential artists at work today and certainly one of the most important. A complete illustrated documentation of his career, the present volume also contains the first bibliography and chronology of de Kooning's work. Hess, executive editor of Art News and one of de Kooning's leading champions, dated the plates with the artist's help. They run from the early 1930s abstractions and the figures of the late 1930s through the Pink Angels, the Woman I stages of 1951, and the large abstractions of 1957-1959. Contents: Text; Notes on the Plates; Plates; Chronology; Selected Chronological Bibliography with a Few Notes; Index of Plates; Index of Names and Subjects.
