Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. A biography of Elizabeth "Libbie" Bacon Custer (1842-1933), from her Michigan girlhood and courtship through the Civil War and the Custers' frontier postings in Texas, Kansas and Dakota Territory, to her fifty-seven years as a widow after the Little Bighorn. During that time she lectured, corresponded with her husband's veterans and wrote three books that shaped the public image of George Armstrong Custer. The authors draw on the Elizabeth Custer Library and Museum at Garryowen, Montana, the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections at the University of North Dakota, and the Western Americana Collection at Yale's Beinecke Library. The photographs include Custer family portraits, the quarters at Fort Lincoln, Northern Pacific Railroad tickets found in Custer's trunk after his death, and the notice Custer placed in a Bismarck newspaper refusing responsibility for his wife's debts. The appendix reproduces Elizabeth Custer's last will and testament. Howard Kazanjian was producer of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi; Chris Enss is the author of more than a dozen books on women of the Old West. Contents: Acknowledgments; Introduction; Before George; Courting Elizabeth; Newlyweds; Common Enemies; Missing Elizabeth; Custer's Maiden; Trouble Apart; Plains Living; Losing George; Suddenly Alone; Appendix: The Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth Bacon Custer; Notes; Bibliography; Index; About the Authors.
