Catalogue of a solo exhibition of the Kazakh landscape painter Arkadii Evgen'evich Gorbatov. The introductory essay describes how, from 1960 to 1976, Gorbatov worked at the K. I. Satpaev Institute of Geological Sciences of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences under the archaeologist A. G. Medoev, traveling with geologists and archaeologists across Kazakhstan from the Chingiz range to the Caspian. His "historical" landscapes record the Sary-Arka steppe, the shores of Lake Balkhash and the Mangyshlak peninsula, where he painted the underground mosques of Shakpak-ata and Sultan-epe and the region's necropolises; later work turns to petroglyphs and stone kurgan figures. At the time of the exhibition he worked in the archaeology department of the Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography. Includes a list of exhibitions from 1957 (among them the solo shows The Ancient Land of Mangyshlak, 1970, and Petroglyphs of the Balkhash Region, 1971), a bibliography, and a catalogue of works 1960-1987 giving medium, dimensions and owning institutions. Illustrations include Interior of the Shakpak-ata Mosque (1967), a hunting scene from rock engravings in the Temirlik mountains (1985), and a photograph of the artist painting a mural at the Academy of Sciences base at Shaulder (1976). Frontispiece portrait of the artist with printed facsimile signature.
