A picture book of three centuries of Stockholm street and social life, from the Swedish age of great power to about 1900, compiled by Gosta Selling, director of the Stockholm City Museum, with art critic Gotthard Johansson and Goran Axel-Nilsson. The foreword says it grew out of the museum's exhibition "Stockholmsliv genom konstnarsogon" (Stockholm life through artists' eyes). Six chapters pair the city with its writers and artists, from Erik Dahlberg's Suecia engravings and Bellman's 18th-century taverns to the Stockholm of Strindberg and Hjalmar Soderberg. Images include Pehr Hillestrom's interiors, the Martin school's views, Princess Eugenie's drawing of Jenny Lind as Lucia, and Eugene Jansson's "Stadens utkant" (1899). Published in 1943, the year neutral Sweden ended German troop transit across the country. Contents: Forord; Erik Dahlbergs Stockholm; Bellmans Stockholm; Karl Johans Stockholm; August Blanches Stockholm; Strindbergs Stockholm; Hjalmar Soderbergs Stockholm.
