Pocket monograph on the watercolors and sketchbook pages from Eugene Delacroix's 1832 journey to Morocco with the diplomatic mission of the comte de Mornay to Sultan Moulay Abd er-Rahman, by Louvre curator and Delacroix scholar Maurice Serullaz. His introductory essay, "L'Orientalisme de Delacroix et son voyage au Maroc," traces the journey from Tangier to Meknes and Algiers through Delacroix's own Journal and letters, and follows the trip's influence on the "Femmes d'Alger," the "Noce juive au Maroc" and later Orientalist painters from Chasseriau and Fromentin to Renoir and Matisse. The color plates reproduce watercolors and pencil studies, many bearing the "E.D." stamp of the 1864 Delacroix studio sale, including leaves from the "au Maroc" album bequeathed to the Louvre by Philippe Burty, the port of Tangier, the comte de Mornay's apartment, a fantasia, studies for the "Femmes d'Alger," and a view near Meknes dated "27 mardi mars." A catalogue of the plates gives medium, dimensions, provenance, bibliography and exhibition history for each.
