Catalogue of the exhibition that opened Hancock Shaker Village's new visitors center in June 2000, reproducing in full color all twenty-five Shaker gift drawings in the Village's collection. These are the private visionary drawings "seen and received" by Shaker instruments at Hancock, Massachusetts, and Mount Lebanon, New York, during the revival period known as Mother's Work (1837 to the late 1860s). An introduction places the drawings in Shaker religious life, followed by biographies of the artists, among them Hannah Cohoon, Polly Collins and Polly Jane Reed. Each drawing is paired with a complete literal transcription of its inscribed text. Plates include Cohoon's The Tree of Light or Blazing Tree (1845), A Bower of Mulberry Trees and A little Basket full of Beautiful Apples (1856); Collins's Wreath brought by Mother's little dove (1853); and Reed's A Type of Mother Hannah's Pocket Handkerchief (1851), front and back. Ends with notes and an essay on the Shaker legacy at Hancock.
