Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. First edition of Clark's study of the origins of modern art in the painting of Parisian life by Manet and his followers. Clark argues that modernism grew out of these painters' attempts to represent the new Paris of the 1860s and 1870s: Haussmann's boulevards, cafes, suburban pleasure grounds and the clerks and shopgirls who filled them. Includes chapters on Haussmann's city, Manet's Olympia, Argenteuil and the environs of Paris, and A Bar at the Folies-Bergere; Seurat's Un Dimanche apres-midi a l'Ile de la Grande Jatte is reproduced as a double-page color plate. Plates include works by Pissarro, Monet, Cezanne, Raffaelli and Guillaumin. Clark, then professor of art history at Harvard, had previously written The Absolute Bourgeois and Image of the People. Contents: Illustrations; Acknowledgements; Introduction; The View from Notre-Dame; Olympia's Choice; The Environs of Paris; A Bar at the Folies-Bergere; Conclusion; Notes; Bibliography; Index.
