In Good condition. Pictorial covers with John Steel's painting of a Hitler Youth flag-bearer before Hitler, a Messerschmitt and massed troops on front, and a montage of a diving Stuka, Panzer tank and saluting officer on rear; bumping and creasing to edges and corners, mild to moderate shelf and edge wear, some mild color loss along edges. 3/4-inch scuffed patch at top corner of rear cover where a thin layer of color has rubbed off; some color loss to top corner of front cover where a price sticker was removed. Mild creasing to spine. Binding tight. Mild soiling to edges of text block; pages clean and unmarked. As-told-to memoir of Eric Kreye's boyhood in the village of Unsen, near Hameln in Lower Saxony, written with Adventist author Norma R. Youngberg. Kreye grows up in the Jungvolk and Hitler Youth, torn between the movement and a father who had lived in Michigan and despised the regime. His father is drafted into Gestapo training, American tanks reach the village, and after the war Eric emigrates to the United States and becomes a Seventh-day Adventist. Ends with period photographs of the Kreye family, Unsen and the old school at Holtensen. The cover and full-page illustrations are by John Steel (1921-1998), the California illustrator who also painted Revell and Monogram model-kit box art and illustrated Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories for Pacific Press.
