Condition & notes

In Very Good condition. Glossy pictorial wrappers with French flaps reaching to within about 1/2 inch of spine; front cover reproduces Shannon's levitation sculpture Parallel Planet (1990), rear cover his Earth... and Atom wordcircle (1973). Mild shelf and edge wear, light scuffing to covers. Binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Survey of twenty-five years of work by the American artist Thomas Shannon (b. 1947), arranged by theme rather than date, with Shannon's own commentary beside each piece. Shannon is best known for magnetic levitation sculpture, in which wood, metal and painted globes float above their bases on permanent magnets. The Levitation section includes The Compass of Love (1981, Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris), the small floating-box sculptures and the Compass Moon Atom Room commissioned by the Moderna Museet, Stockholm. Later sections give the Astronomics 109 scale works, watercolors and ink paintings, montage schematics for architectural projects, the Crystal Ball light-sphere concept, and patented instruments including the Telephysical Phone System (1973), paired telephones that transmit touch. The biography includes Squat (1966), the plant-activated robotic sculpture shown in the Museum of Modern Art's The Machine as Seen at the End of the Mechanical Age, curated by Hulten. Also includes exhibition history, awards and patents, and a selected bibliography. Contents: Introduction (Pontus Hulten); Essay (Thomas Shannon); Levitation; Astronomics 109; Atomization; Projections; Natural Pictures; Studies; Motion Pictures; Instruments; Biography; Bibliography; Photo Credits.
