Blue textured paper over boards with gilt lettering and Witherby device on spine; light bumping to edges and corners, mild surface and edge wear with some color loss along edges. Binding tight. Endpapers mildly toned where jacket flaps lay against them, otherwise pages unmarked. Yellow and blue pictorial dust jacket with photograph of Odin v. Tannenmeise on front; several nicks, chips and tears of 3/4 inch or less along edges, creasing along edges, 1-inch scratch with some nicking to paper near top of front panel by spine, mild overall surface and edge wear, fading to spine. Original UK price sticker (30.00 pounds) on front flap. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Advanced rewrite of Willis's 1976 German Shepherd book, by the Newcastle University animal geneticist (1935-2011) who started hip scoring in Britain in 1978 and ran the genetic side of the BVA hip scheme. The jacket calls it unique among breed books in dealing exclusively with breeding and genetics. Opens with the breed's history and standards, then gives detailed portraits of several hundred major dogs from Germany, Britain, Australia/New Zealand and North America, followed by chapters on genetic principles, reproduction, inherited defects, hip dysplasia, behaviour, and selection and breeding systems. Appendices list German VA winners 1938-90, British Champions 1920-90, American Selects 1961-90 and progeny tests for hip scores, with parentage. Written for breeders, judges and veterinarians. Contents: Preface; History of the German Shepherd Dog Breed; The Standards of the Breed and the Inheritance of Coat Colour; Judging the German Shepherd Dog; German and Other European Dogs; British Dogs; Australian and New Zealand Dogs; North American Dogs; Genetic Principles as they Apply to the GSD; The Inheritance of Reproductive Traits; Genetic Defects in the Breed; Hip Dysplasia; The Genetics of Behaviour; Selection Objectives and Methods; Breeding Systems; Appendix I: German Auslesgruppe Winners (VA) 1938-90; Appendix II: British Champions 1920-90; Appendix III: American Selects 1961-90; Appendix IV: Progeny Tests for Hip Scores: Active Sires; Appendix V: Progeny Tests for Hip Scores: Inactive Sires; References; Glossary; Bibliography; Index of Dogs; General Index.
