Condition & notes

In Good condition, no dust jacket. Maroon pebble-grain cloth boards with publisher's device blind-stamped on front cover and black lettering on spine; mild to moderate shelf wear with some scuffing and soiling to covers and mild color loss along edges and spine. Binding tight. Pages mildly toned, with a small brown spot at gutter of p. 27 and a few small spots in margins of pp. 136-137. Otherwise unmarked. MIT's standard text on machine drawing, first published in 1913 by Walter H. James, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Malcolm C. Mackenzie, then rewritten in 1931 with Alvin Sloane "towards standardization of drafting-room practice." Not an elementary drawing book but a treatise on applying mechanical drawing to the design and description of machinery: orthographic projection, conventional representations for threads, piping, springs and rivets, dimensioning, limits and fits, sketching from the object, drafting-room procedure and lettering, classes of drawings, and mechanical perspective, isometric, oblique and cabinet drawing. Section on reproducing drawings, from tracing and blueprint to photostat, photogravure and zinc etching. Appendix tables cover screw threads (U.S. Standard, S.A.E., Acme, Whitworth), bolts and nuts, Whitney (Woodruff) keys, Morse, Jarno and Brown & Sharpe tapers, pipe and fittings, and wire gauges.
