Description

Alexander Moring Limited, The De La More Press, [No date: circa 1936]. Wraps, 21 pp.; 20 x 13.5 cm; Saint George Series; illustrated with 7 black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings by G. M. Levett-Prinsep, one repeated on front cover.

Condition & notes

In Good condition. Blue and cream mottled paper covers, illustrated front cover lettered in black; bumping increasing to edges and corners, moderate overall toning, heavier at edges and spine, with some scuffing and color loss to spine. String-tied through center fold; binding tight. Pages toned, with occasional light foxing. Otherwise unmarked. Verses of childhood on a Dimbula tea estate, written for the author's baby niece, Marjorie Jane Newton, "born and buried on the Tea fields of Ceylon," and dedicated to "all babies in Ceylon and elsewhere." Nanny, the bungalow verandah, the south-west monsoon and the 'squito net, frogs, fireflies and leeches, the wire-shoot sending firewood down to the factory, and Daddy calling in Tamil across the Tea. Titles include "When I'm a Man I Shall Be a Tea Planter," "Daddy's Cover Crop" and "I Don't Like Leeches, Do You?"; the last, "To M. J.," is a birthday poem for a child turning three. Drawings show the tea hills, a planter walking his child and dogs through the bushes, and a baby riding a tea chest down the wire-shoot. The Saint George Series (1920-1938) was the De La More Press's line of short illustrated books.
